Danantara Wants to Invest Big in the Healthcare Sector

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Danantara Indonesia is set to invest heavily in the healthcare sector. Its Managing Director of Investment, Stefanus Ade Hadiwidjaja, emphasized that healthcare is not just a cost, but a strategic investment for Indonesia.

“And one important message I want to emphasize is, healthcare is not a cost, but an investment. Let’s work together to build this sector, considering the huge opportunities in the market,” Stefanus said at the InterSystems Asia Healthcare Summit 2025 in Jakarta, Wednesday (September 3, 2025).

Investment opportunities in Indonesia’s healthcare sector remain significant because the number of hospitals and public spending on healthcare are still far below the regional, let alone global, average. The number of hospitals in Indonesia as of 2024 is only around 1,070, compared to the Philippines, which has 1,753 hospitals. Health spending compared to GDP in Indonesia has also not reached 3 percent.

Stefanus explained that Danantara’s healthcare investment will focus on three main areas: healthcare services, manufacturing, and innovation and technology.

He said that Indonesia still has relatively low access to hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities compared to other countries. Therefore, Danantara will make the best use of its existing assets, such as the IHC hospital network, including Bali International Hospital in Sanur, and Kimia Farma Diagnostic, which has nearly 400 clinics and 100 diagnostic facilities.

“So, we actually already have two major assets. In fact, these two assets, the entire IHC hospital network, including Bali, constitute the largest hospital network in Indonesia,” he explained.

On the manufacturing side, Danantara is targeting the construction of strategic factories, including blood plasma processing facilities. This plasma-derived product has proven crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic because it can save many lives.

Danantara is also preparing investments in health innovations such as biotechnology and vaccines, so that Indonesia has a stronger and more independent health ecosystem.

“Hopefully, we can also invest in and continue to improve the overall health ecosystem, both in terms of innovation, biotechnology, vaccines, and so on,” he explained.

He then explained that one of Danantara’s flagship projects is the construction of a world-class hospital in Sanur, Bali, with a capacity of 250 beds. This facility collaborates with renowned global partners, such as the Mayo Clinic, the Heart Center for cardiac care, and diagnostic facilities.

“We want to build world-class healthcare facilities and hospitals in Indonesia, ones that can compete with those in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Therefore, I strongly encourage all of you, instead of going to Singapore or Malaysia for a medical check-up, or to Penang, come to Bali, to Sanur, get your check-up there, and enjoy Bali at the same time,” he concluded.
