Indonesia’s coal downstreaming efforts face another hurdle as some national strategic projects struggle to find investment partners, funding, and economic viability for their products.
PT Bukit Asam Tbk’s coal-to-dimethyl ether project in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, is one of them. Danantara Indonesia leads the business validation case to study its economic viability and to design financing plans for the project.
The Tanjung Enim project was designed to process 7 million tonnes of coal to 1.4 million tonnes of DME per year.
PT Bukit Asam Tbk Vice President Dahlia Muchtar said PT Pertamina, a state energy firm, is being involved in the process as a potential offtaker. Dahlia expects the business validation case to be concluded this year before the project enters its final investment decision at the end of 2027.
