Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Indonesia’s waste problem will be addressed through the Waste to Energy (PSEL) project. Following a partnership with the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) will partner with 11 other regional governments next week.
“Next week there will be a second batch; we will have 11 provinces,” Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said during the PSEL MoU signing between Danantara and the regional governments at Graha Mandiri Jakarta on Monday (May 4, 2026).
The man, familiarly known as Zulhas, explained that following today’s agreement with the Jakarta Regional Government, next week it will be implemented with 11 regional governments, including Yogyakarta, Lampung, Serang, Semarang, Surabaya, Bekasi, Medan, Tangerang, and Greater Bogor.
“[The deal in] Palembang is close to be sealed, but under Presidential Decree 35, we will later combine them into 109. Then, four more new ones are being prepared: Pekalongan, Tegal Raya, Bandar Regency, and Karawang Regency,” he added.
For your information, Danantara is partnering with the Jakarta Provincial Government today to work on the PSEL project. This is in response to the waste problem in Jakarta, which has reached an emergency level and received special attention from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
“In fact, Jakarta is receiving special attention from the President. We’ve been receiving calls almost every week, especially in the past few weeks, about waste, especially in Bantar Gebang,” he said.
Zulhas stated that within six months of the Presidential Regulation being enacted, three construction sites had been established: Bandung, Bali, and Bogor. “One, which uses Presidential Regulation [Number] 35, in South Sumatra, will be completed in October,” he added.
He added that 14 other locations have been decided on, and five have not yet been decided. These PSEL locations cover nearly 71 regencies/cities.
“The acceleration is six months. Previously, it took 11 years. Now, we will complete 71 regencies and cities established in approximately 22 agglomerations,” he said.
