MIND ID and Pertamina Sign MoU to Strengthen National Energy Independence

Indonesian Mining Industry Holding Company (MIND ID) and PT Pertamina (Persero) are strengthening their strategic collaboration to support President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of strengthening the resilience and independence of the national energy sector. This collaboration focuses on accelerating the downstream processing of coal into alternative energy products such as Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), Dimethyl Ether (DME), and Methanol by strengthening the national mineral, coal, and energy chains.

This transformative step was marked by the signing of a cooperation agreement between MIND ID and Pertamina on Friday, January 9, 2026. The event was witnessed by Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer Sigit P. Santosa and Managing Director of Industrialization Ardy Muawin.

MIND ID demonstrated its commitment to fulfilling the government’s mandate to support the downstreaming and industrialization agenda through the utilization of coal downstream technology.

Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer Sigit P. Santosa stated that the collaboration between MIND ID and Pertamina reflects an integrated approach to developing the national energy system. Indonesia urgently needs energy diversification to support development.

“Collaboration and synergy between strategic state-owned enterprises can strengthen the foundation of national energy. Technology-based downstreaming is a crucial instrument for optimizing the use of domestic resources while building a more resilient, efficient, and long-term energy system,” said Sigit.

MIND ID President Director Maroef Sjamsoeddin stated that this collaboration is part of an effort to strengthen the national industrial structure by developing the domestic mineral, coal, and energy value chain. Through this collaboration with Pertamina, MIND ID is committed to encouraging downstreaming that adds economic value, reduces dependence on imports, increases competitiveness, creates new jobs, and strengthens national energy security in the long term.

“MIND ID, through Bukit Asam, which will act as a supplier, together with Pertamina, will closely monitor every stage of this collaboration until it can be realized and its benefits felt by the entire nation and state,” he said.

In this collaboration, Pertamina plays the role of offtaker and aggregator of distribution infrastructure. With its superior distribution network, Pertamina ensures that downstream coal products, such as Dimethyl Ether (DME), Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), and methanol, can be effectively absorbed and distributed to the public and industry as a substitute for imported energy.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that this collaboration is a milestone for Indonesia’s energy sovereignty. “As the backbone of the national energy sector, we are committed to optimizing Pertamina’s distribution infrastructure to support this downstream process through collaboration with MIND ID,” said Simon.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources projects that national LPG consumption will reach 10 million metric tons (MT) by 2026, while domestic production only reaches 1.3 to 1.4 million MT. The MIND ID-Pertamina collaboration through the utilization of coal to DME and coal to SNG is a strategic solution to cover this deficit using domestic natural resources, as an effort to strengthen the resilience and independence of the national energy sector.
