Purbaya Bans Danantara from Asking the State: Must Become a Private Entity

Published on October 27, 2025, by CNN Indonesia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) should be a private sector entity, so its operations are based on such conditions.

Purbaya said Danantara was intended to be separate from the state, different from State-Owned Enterprises Ministry.

“Danantara is supposed to be private sector entity, so let it work with its environment. Think professionally, privately,” Purbaya said during the Economic Spesial Hari Keuangan Nasional at CNN Studio in South Jakarta, Monday (27/10).

“It means, if any problem arise, don’t come asking to the state, that’s about it. You [Danantara] was formed to be separated from the state,” he said.

The money made by Danantara each year, according to Purbaya, should be enough. The coffers came from the dividends of state-owned enterprises which are estimated to exceed Rp100 trillion.

Purbaya said he can discuss Danantara at length if he was still an economist. Besides, he thought it was too early to comment on the new entity.

“Make optimal use of it (dividends). We’ll see what role it (Danantara) plays in moving our private sector forward. It’s a good design, if executed well. It’s still early days, it’s too early to say,” said Purbaya. “This is the same with a new government; everything is still adjusting. If you ask, is it ideal now? It’s far from ideal. But I think this is a bold step to ensure that the private entity of the government, previously under the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, can truly operate professionally, within the private sector, with substantial funding. I think that’s a good thing, as long as it’s executed well going forward,” he concluded. The full interview with Purbaya can be watched on the Economic Finance Day program, which will air on CNN Indonesia TV this coming Thursday (October 30th).
